HEAD JUDGE DUTIES
- Please be cool, calm, and collected throughout the day!
- You are the site manager for the room to which you have been assigned. Observe that things are running smoothly: the paper flow is good, everybody seems to know what s/he is doing, etc. Report any problems to the Problem Captain if you don't know how to fix them.
- Make sure the judges and the Timer/Announcer maintain the time schedule.
- Be very familiar with the problem and its requirements so you can do a good job of presenting the scores to the coaches.
- Post the team name when their scores are ready to be picked up. The coaches should not expect scores till at least 30 minutes after the performance and probably longer.
Present the long-term scores on the pink NCR form to coaches:
- Be positive but do not compare performances.
- Explain that these are the raw scores -- scores will be normalized to 200 in the score room.
- Review penalty points, if any. Before presenting scores to the Coach, confer with judges who assessed penalty on the exact reason for it so you can explain it thoroughly.
- Be familiar with content of sticky notes and offer some highlights to the Coach..
- Tell the Coach s/he has 30 minutes after receiving the scores to protest. Remind Coach that only scores of 0 and penalties are "protestable".
- Put the time you finish your discussion with the Coach on the score sheet.
- Thank the Coach for all of their hard work.
If there is a protest:
- Confer with the judges to determine if, in fact, the score or penalty could be wrong. They can change it. Convey judges' decision to Coach. Oversee any score correction. Make sure it is reported to the Scoreroom, if scores were already picked up. If a protest persists, bring it to the Problem Captain who will then try to handle the problem.
After the final team performs:
- Keep the judging team together for at least 30 minutes after the last coach has received scores. During this time, discuss with the judging team any potential Ranatra Fusca (outstanding creativity) or Omer (outstanding sportsmanship) award nominations. If there are any nominations, have the judges write very specifically why a team deserves an award.
- Help all judges restore the site to its original condition according to the map
- Dismiss your team only after receiving the OK from the Problem Captain to do so.
PAPERWORK
- Receive the Staging Area Checklist, Materials Cost Form, Outside Assistance Form, etc. from the Timer.
- Check the Staging Area Checklist to see if the Pre-Staging Judge feels a penalty should be meted out. If so, inform the Problem judges.
- Paper clip these together with the Staging Area Checklist on top
- Collect completed score forms from the Problem Judges and the Style Judges--including any documentation given to the Problem Judges.
- Add this compilation of scores to the paperclip with the team's Staging Area Checklist, Materials Cost Form, Outside Assistance Form, etc. Arrange pile in such a way that the Staging Area Checklist is directly underneath the Judges' scores
- Put forms in Team's envelope. Give envelope to the Scorekeeper
- Regarding the NCR score forms: White goes to the scoreroom, Pink is presented to the coaches, Yellow stays at the site
Have a great day!! You will be wowed by a lot of stuff you see! Enjoy it.
